MATH SUPERSTARS

Math Superstars is a weekly program designed to teach students problem solving and application of math skills. This program is a vital and challenging part of Trinity Christian School’s critical thinking education and children will greatly benefit from participating. Refer to "Problem Solving Strategies" (PDF) for some of the strategies students will learn through this program.

The Math Superstars program is NOT optional and will be part of the student's math grade.  Grading is based upon effort and participation, not how many problems are solved correctly.  A quarterly grade will be given to each child based on the number of worksheets attempted and turned in on time each nine weeks.

Each Monday children will receive a new worksheet in the Math Superstar folder to take home and complete. During the week, teachers will be teaching similar problems during math time to help students understand some of the more difficult concepts that may be on that week’s Superstar worksheet. The completed lesson is due back the following Monday in the Math Superstar folder. The lesson will be graded and returned in children's test folders for parents to review, sign, and return the next day.

Each question is given a point value (number of stars) based on the difficulty of the question. The total number of points (stars) will be tallied weekly and tracked on the classroom star chart. Our Math Superstars program rewards every student for his or her work. Prizes will be given at different point levels and will be dispersed throughout the year. Students may earn certificates for every 25 points earned to be used in the Math Superstar Store on Fridays. Students may be recognized in chapel and on the “I’m A Star” display in the lunchroom for every 100 points earned. A Math Superstar Parent Volunteer is assigned to each class and is in charge of collecting and grading worksheets, returning graded worksheets, tracking student progress on the classroom chart, and distributing prizes.

Students should complete the lessons on their own to the best of their ability, showing their work on the worksheet. "Keys To Success in Math Superstars" (PDF) will assist students in the thought process. If they use a separate sheet of paper to work a problem, it should be included in the folder when it is returned. It is important that students get used to the idea of showing their work. All problems should be attempted, but do not worry if your child can not correctly solve all of the problems, as Math Superstars is an accelerated math program. Parental help is allowed if necessary, but please follow the guidelines provided in "How to Help Your Math Superstar" (PDF).

We look forward to seeing children progress through this program! Please communicate any comments or questions about the program to your child’s teacher through the Math Superstar folder.
